Tips for Keeping Your Renovation Project Tidy

If you’re planning a renovation project, it can be overwhelming to imagine your home in shambles... especially if you will be continuing to live in the home while the work is being done. Keep these tips in mind to create some order through the chaos, as well as to protect the parts of your home that will accumulate dust and other waste throughout the renovation.

Plan ahead at least one week at a time to organize what tools and materials you will need to use and what can be temporarily stored. This will dramatically reduce the amount of clutter in your home. It will also make it easier when it comes time to use a certain item to know that everything you need will be easily accessible.

If this is a larger renovation that will limit your access to your kitchen and/or laundry room, make sure you will still have a designated washing station, as well as a small counter space to prepare food. Even if you will only be restricted access for a short period of time, these two spaces are essential. It is much easier to plan these spaces ahead of time, rather than scrambling and having to move things around later.

Plastic drop cloths are about to become your new best friend! The amount of dust that will accumulate in spaces you didn’t know existed is crazy. Use light plastic drop cloths to catch dust and preserve any furniture, rugs, textiles, etc. Also be sure to block off rooms so that the dust doesn’t travel between the rooms.

Have a designated spot for receipts and other paperwork, so that it can be filed right away. You will quickly accumulate confirmations, warranty policies, receipts, and any other paperwork you may want to hold onto, so make sure you are prepared! This could be as simple as having a small file folder kept in a safe spot, or tucked away in a drawer. Avoiding having surfaces covered in paperwork will not only make it easier to find things, but also help keep your home feeling tidy and decluttered during your renovation.

Get rid of waste as soon as it accumulates. Consider having a bin rental on site to avoid cluttering your space with piles of garbage, simply toss it into the bin right away! Bin rentals fit within just one parking space, include driveway protection, and have double doors on the end for easy loading. You also won’t have to worry about separating garbage from recyclable materials as you would with municipal garbage pick up, simply toss all material in the same bin!
